Did you know that over 60% of people who use hemp products use them to promote sleep? It’s true. Hemp derived oils, pills and gummies have been used as a sleep aid by thousands of people. And that’s mostly due to the first cannabinoid discovered, Cannabinol (CBN).

If you read our Cannabis 101 blog, you know that there are several varieties of cannabinoids. The main two are THC and CBD. When these two major Cannabinoids come together with this first but less well known element, they can become a formula to promote sleep. Now, researchers are studying how THC, CBD and CBN, combine to help people fall asleep, stay asleep and wake up feeling refreshed.

What is CBN?

CBN is one type of Cannabinoid found in the Cannabis Sativa plant. CBN was actually the very first Cannabinoid to be discovered in the 1880s. This cannabinoid is actually a product of the more popular THC. CBN forms as the plant ages and THC begins to break down. Light and heat can accelerate this process, which is why it's recommended to store hemp plants in a cool, dark place.

In the past several decades, researchers have found that CBN can have health benefits similar to those of CBD. It has been found to be an effective anti-inflammatory agent as well as an asset for long-term pain relief. The effects of CBN and its health promoting benefits are still being studied.

How does CBN help with sleep?

Since the use of hemp-derived products was made federally legal by the 2018 farm bill, many companies have been promoting hemp-derived products as sleep aids for those suffering from insomnia or just looking for a restful night. While these products contain CBD and, often, trace amounts of THC, the potent sedative ingredient used to help users fall and stay asleep is CBN. This cannabinoid has a relatively long history as a sleep aid.

In the 1970’s and 80’s, some research indicated CBN helped to induce feelings of relaxation and lengthened the time patients suffering insomnia were able to stay asleep. More recent studies involving mice found that rodents who ingested CBN fell asleep faster and stayed asleep longer than their companions who did not. Though more research is needed, it appears that CBN has a quality that can help certain people fall asleep more quickly and stay asleep longer.

Why is CBN often combined with CBD and THC?

While cannabinoids can have health benefits on their own, research has shown that they often work best together. Trace amounts of THC increase the anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties found in CBD. Likewise, research has shown that THC can work with CBN to create relaxation and promote better sleep. That is why products like our Sherpa Nighttime Gummies combine a small amount of THC with CBN as well as CBD so that your whole body can feel naturally relaxed, pain free and ready for a great night’s rest.

Does CBN get you high?

The short answer? No. CBN, like  most other cannabinoids when taken by themselves will not get you high. To date, THC is the only cannabinoid found to produce a “high” feeling that affects mood and brain function.

That said, some research has found that CBN, unlike CBD, might have slightly psychoactive properties in very high dosages. However, you would have to take a very high dose of CBN to feel any slightly intoxicating effects. The dosage would be much more than that found in most sleep aids. That said, as with any hemp-derived products, it’s important to check the dosages on the packaging before you buy.
